A YouTube playlist containing monologues, dialogues, narrations, readings, speeches, and other examples of spoken English for the listening pleasure and edification of Ultimate English students.
This group exists solely to promote and support the learning of past, present, and future Ultimate English students. Participation is encouraged. Suggestions are welcome and appreciated. This is a private group on Facebook, which means anyone can view the group wall and see the group’s members, but only existing members can post to the wall or invite new members.
Vocabulary.com is the easiest, most intelligent way to improve your vocabulary. It combines an adaptive learning system (The Challenge) with the world’s fastest dictionary (The Dictionary) so that you can more quickly and more efficiently learn words.
One of the best features of Vocabulary.com is that you can easily make and share Vocabulary lists. I have created two lists so far:
Many studies have shown that the best way to learn is through multiple exposures to a word, with challenging questions that make you think. That’s what Vocabulary.com provides.
Pinterest is a virtual pinboard. A pin is an image added to Pinterest. A pin can be added from a website using the Pin It button, or you can upload images from your computer.
A board is a set of pins. A board can be created on any topic. You can add as many pins to a board as you want.
Pinterest is currently invite-only. You can request an invite from Pinterest or you can be invited by someone who is already a part of Pinterest, like me.
When you receive an invite, you can register via Facebook Connect or connect through Twitter.
Diigo is two services in one — it is a research and collaborative research tool on the one hand, and a knowledge-sharing community and social content site on the other.
As I read on the web, instead of just bookmarking, I can highlight portions of web pages that are of particular interest to me. I can also attach sticky notes to specific parts of web pages. Unlike most other web “highlighters” that merely clip, Diigo highlights and sticky notes are persistent in the sense that whenever I return to the original web page, I will see my highlights and sticky notes superimposed on the original page.
I can easily share my findings, complete with my highlights and sticky notes. That’s why I created a group on Diigo to share my relevant resources, findings and thoughts with you.
Goodreads is the world’s largest site for readers and book recommendations. See what your friends are reading, organize what you’ve read, list your favorite books, discuss literature, form groups, and connect with other readers.
Goodreads | Stephen Thergesen is my Goodreads profile. See my favorite books, my favorite quotes, and what I’m currently reading.
Goodreads | Ultimate English is a private reading group for Ultimate English students.
Evernote is an extension of a person’s memory. Everything is in a single note. Everything is searchable. It’s visual. It’s an exact extension of how people remember things.
Evernote provides many different ways to share notes and notebooks. Public notebooks (which are, essentially, shared notebooks) are visible to anybody who knows the notebook’s URL. My notebook’s URL is assigned to a button in the right-hand column of this blog. The notebook’s contents are viewable by everyone but only editable by myself and registered Ultimate English students.
Starting in 2007, daylight savings time (DST) begins in the United States on the second Sunday in March and ends on the first Sunday in November. On the second Sunday in March, clocks are set ahead one hour at 2:00 a.m. local standard time, which becomes 3:00 a.m. local daylight time. On the first Sunday in November, clocks are set back one hour at 2:00 a.m. local daylight time, which becomes 1:00 a.m. local standard time. These dates were established by Congress in the Energy Policy Act of 2005, Pub. L. no. 109-58, 119 Stat 594 (2005).
Not all places in the U.S. observe daylight savings time. In particular, Hawaii and most of Arizona do not use it. Indiana adopted its use beginning in 2006.
For Ultimate English students who are booking appointments, this means the Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) offset will change from MST (GMT -7) to MDT (GMT -6) for the duration of DST.
